AHCPS Executive to recommend NO vote

(26 Feb 2013)

ASSOCIATION OF HIGHER CIVIL AND PUBLIC SERVANTS (AHCPS) TO BALLOT MEMBERHIP AND RECOMMEND NO VOTE TO EXTENSION OF CROKE PARK AGREEMENT

26TH FEBRUARY –

The Association of Higher Civil and Public Servants has decided to ballot its members on the proposed extension of the Croke Park Agreement and will be recommending a NO vote. This decision was taken today by the Executive Committee of the AHCPS. The AHCPS has a membership of over 2,700 in Civil Service and Non-Commercial Semi-State sector.

General Secretary of the AHCPS Dave Thomas stated ‘ today’s decision is one that was not taken lightly, however given the scale of the pay cuts proposed we have no other choice but to strongly recommend a NO vote on the part of our members. The current proposals follow on a range of cuts already absorbed by AHCPS members in recent years.

AHCPS members have already suffered pay reductions of between 15 and 17% before tax and USC increases are taken into account, in addition to extra working hours.

In addition these proposals raise legitimate questions as to the actual value that the government currently places on the work carried out by civil and public servants.

There are other options available to the government, not least in the context of taxation. However these options have been steadfastly resisted.

Against a background of ongoing cuts and general erosion in take home pay and conditions the current proposed cuts are simply a step too far. We see ourselves as having no other choice but to recommend a NO vote’.
