AHCPS comments on abolition of Chairpersons and Delegates Allowance

(18 Sep 2012)

The AHCPS has issued the following comment in response to today's announcement by the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform regarding the abolition of the Chairpersons and Delegates Allowance:

"The Association of Higher Civil and Public Servants (AHCPS) fully recognises the reform process that is underway throughout the public service and the need to make savings and efficiencies under the Croke Park Agreement as agreed between public service unions and the Government. We understand that costs must be reduced and our members have already endured cuts of up to 20% in basic pay, pensions, and entitlements.

"However, AHCPS members will be disproportionately impacted by today’s decision to abolish the Chairpersons’ and Delegates’ Allowance.

"The upcoming Irish Presidency of the European Union will place an extremely onerous workload on many of our members over the next 18 months at a time when resources are already very stretched. In this context the outright abolition of this allowance for those representing Ireland at international meetings is an extremely unfair decision in order to achieve minimal savings.

"Given the strength of feeling among our members on this issue, the Executive of the AHCPS will consider all available options under the Croke Park Agreement in regard to maintaining the allowance."
